Okay, so I did something a little different for our book / wine pairing today. A few weekends ago, I was running in and out of the house, keeping track of the kids. I was also trying to reread a favorite book of mine for, oh I don't know, probably the third or fourth time... at least. Somewhere in all the busyness I set my book and my glass down and when I came back in the house, I thought to myself, "that would make a nice picture for the blog". (Even if it is a little tattered and worn.) Just goes to show how much I love this book! So here it is, my very own love worn copy of Bestselling Author Karen Marie Moning's Beyond the Highland Mist and a glass of Golden Chardonnay. I'm speaking as an absolute authority on the matter when I tell you that they make a gorgeous pair. So pour yourself a glass and slip into your favorite reading spot with these two this week. Happy Wine Wednesday everyone and, as always, happy reading!
P.S. What are some of your favorite books that you've loved to near death?
He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . .
An alluring laird...
He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart—until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length—but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.
A prisoner in time...
She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side. . . .
Happy Wine Wednesday! We're into the 'dog days' of summer here, in my neck of the woods. If you're rolling along, looking for a little something exciting to spice up these last couple weeks of August, this week's wine / book pairing should do the trick. Author Lawrence Hall's superhero romance, Vigillante, and the ever intriguing, Kung Fu Girl Reisling are the perfect temptation for the adventurous soul. So pull up your favorite reading spot and pour yourself a glass. Happy reading everybody!
Ashlyn Rivers is a detective in the Orias Police Department. Every day she goes about doing her part to protect and serve the people. Recently, a new criminal organization has moved into the city. If they continue to disturb the current crime boss and his empire, they will start a turf war that will hurt a lot of innocent people.
The mayor, meanwhile, has declared that the Vigilante is to be arrested on sight for fear others may try to copy him. Ashlyn cannot explain it, but she feels a connection with him and believes that he actually helps the OPD. If he truly has the abilities they say, she can sleep better at night knowing he has watch. Many in the department however, will go out of their way to make a name for themselves by being the cop that brings him in. Even if it costs lives.
There's a war coming and a lot of blood will be shed, unless Ashlyn can stop it with help from the Vigilante. That's if the Orias Police stay out of the way.
She works for the law, he works above it. Will they find a way to save the city and come together, or will their worlds forever keep their love apart? This debut novel puts a fresh spin on the female heroine, the man that loves her and those she's sworn to protect.
From my review:
I loved the whole superhero theme. I’ve read a ton of paranormal romances because it’s my favorite genre, but I hadn’t read one like this before. Good job, Author Hall, for putting something new on the scene. Vigilante was action packed, full of underworld, criminal intrigues and I could totally see it as a graphic novel. That would be really cool. I liked how the Vigilante’s superhero back story started to take shape in this first book and look forward to more secrets being revealed as the series continues.
… in a land of winter’s tales, beyond the forest and the world we mortals know as ordinary, a maiden lived with hair of gold and snowy white, eyes of shining blue and lips to shame the blood, red rose.
A commoner and the outcast of her village...Nika is forced to flee her home to keep the dark secret of her birth. When she is hunted by a rugged Northman, she finds herself lost in a land of spells and curses. His kisses start to melt her cold, lonely heart, her secrets are laid bare and she finds herself in a magic war for the man and the kingdom she loves.
King of a cursed and ravaged kingdom...when Vasilli first lays eyes on Nika stealing bread at a fair, he knows he has to have the fair haired beauty. The legends surrounding his lands tell of a snow maiden who will break the curse of the Northern Kingdom but he wants Nika for his own.
From a land of winter, ice and snow comes a tale of enchantment and romance. Mages and sorceresses, omens and curses - this spellbinding grownup fairy tale is a story of magic in an ancient land and a legendary love that will heat up even the coldest winter night.
Inspired by the Russian fairy tale The Snow Maiden and legendary characters of The Nutcracker Ballet.
This story involves some intimate scenes and adult situations. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”--Los Angeles Times
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.
“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times
